SEO audits for car repair workshops

Car repair is two markets at once: most workshops have no website, and the sites that do exist often miss the basics. Both are easy conversations.

Note: this is one of our smaller samples. The figures indicate a direction rather than a precise measurement.

What we found

Of the workshops these searches found, 61.5% had no website at all, more than any trade we measured except cafes. Across the 36 that did, the average was 76.7 and half scored 82.5 or better, but 6 scored under 60. It is a small sample, so read the figures as a direction rather than a measurement.

Title tags failed on 19 of the 36 sites and alt text was missing on 16. Workshop sites commonly title every page with the business name, so a page about brake repairs reads the same to a search engine as the page about logbook servicing.

Thirteen had no H1 heading, thirteen had no structured data and 10 had no sitemap. These are the faults of a template site that was published and never revisited.

Every fault, and how often

Half the sites scored 82.5 or more. By band: 61.1% scored 80 to 100, 22.2% 60 to 79, 11.1% 40 to 59 and 5.6% under 40. Of the businesses these searches found, 61.5% had no website at all.

Measured October 2026 from ppclift's own audits of sites found by searches for ‘car repair’, each website counted once however many searches found it; sites that could not be read are left out, the same way as the research post. Points are out of the 100-point score.

Sample finding

Of the 13 workshop sites with no H1 heading, 10 also had no structured data, against 13 of the 36 overall. A site with neither has not told a search engine what the page is about or where the business is, which for a workshop competing on 'mechanic near me' is most of what matters.

What a typical site is missing

The median workshop site scores about 82. The faults most likely to account for the gap are the title tag (4 points, 19 of 36 sites), alt text (6 points, 16 sites) and either the H1 or structured data (8 points each, 13 sites). Structured data is the one that pays: AutoRepair markup with the address, opening hours and services lets a search engine answer 'open Saturday' or 'near me' from the workshop's own site.

How to pitch it

Questions about car repair workshops

Is a website worth it for a workshop that runs on word of mouth?

Word of mouth now ends in a search: people look up the workshop they were told about, and search 'mechanic near me' when they have no recommendation. 61.5% of the workshops these searches found had no website at all, so a basic site already puts one ahead of the majority we found.

What should a workshop's site say?

The services, one page each where possible, the suburb and address, opening hours and a phone number that can be tapped. On these sites 19 of 36 titles failed the length check, so start by giving each page a title that names the service and the suburb.

Do workshops need structured data?

Yes, and it is quick. AutoRepair markup states the address, hours and services in a form search engines and assistants read directly. 13 of the 36 sites had none of any kind.
