Meta descriptions that earn the click

A meta description does not affect rankings directly. It affects whether anybody clicks your result instead of the one above it, which affects everything else.

What it is

The meta description is a short summary in the head of the document. Search engines often use it as the grey snippet text beneath the headline in results.

Google reserves the right to ignore it and generate its own snippet from the page, and frequently does when the description does not match the search. Supplying a good one still gives you the best chance of controlling the message.

Why it matters

Two businesses can rank in adjacent positions and see very different traffic. The description is your sales line: it is where you say what makes the visit worthwhile.

Around 50 to 160 characters is the practical range. Shorter wastes the space; longer gets truncated.

How to fix it

  1. Write a unique description for every page that matters, starting with the most visited.
  2. Describe the specific benefit or answer the page delivers, not the company history.
  3. Include a clear next step where it fits naturally, such as booking, a free quote, or opening hours.
  4. Avoid duplicating the title tag; use the space to add something new.

What good looks like

<meta name="description"
content="Same-day emergency plumbing across Ballarat and district. Licensed, insured, and on call 24 hours. Free phone quotes.">

Common mistakes

  • Leaving it out entirely, which hands the snippet decision to the search engine.
  • Repeating one generic description across the whole site.
  • Writing for a keyword rather than for the person reading the result.
