SEO audits for car dealerships

Car dealerships are one of the few trades where missing structured data is nearly as common as a weak title tag, and it matters more here than almost anywhere else.

Note: this is one of our smaller samples. The figures indicate a direction rather than a precise measurement.

What we found

Across 55 dealership websites found by searches for 'car dealer', the average was 84.1, the third highest of the ten trades we have 40 or more sites for. Almost every dealer has a site: of the businesses these searches found, just 1.6% had none, the lowest of any of those trades. The sample is modest, so treat the figures as indicative.

Title tags were the most common fault (25 sites), with missing structured data a whisker behind on 24; of the ten trades we have 40 or more sites for, only pharmacies lacked structured data more often. Vehicle listings are exactly the sort of catalogue data that structured markup exists to describe, which makes the gap unusually costly.

Many dealers run on industry-specific platforms, so a fault found on one dealership site is often present across every dealer on the same platform. Alt text, by contrast, is the trade's strength: it was missing on only 9 sites, the lowest rate we measured.

Every fault, and how often

Half the sites scored 85 or more. By band: 76.4% scored 80 to 100, 20% 60 to 79, 1.8% 40 to 59 and 1.8% under 40. Of the businesses these searches found, 1.6% had no website at all.

Sample finding

9 of the 15 dealer sites with no sitemap.xml also had no structured data, against 24 of all 55. Both tell a search engine what is on a site and where, and a dealer missing one is more likely to be missing the other. For a site whose value is a stock list that changes every day, that is the difference between new vehicles being found promptly and waiting to be stumbled on.

What a typical site is missing

The median dealer site scores 85. The likely gaps are the title tag (4 points, 25 of 55 sites), structured data (8 points, 24 sites) and the sitemap (6 points, 15 sites): 18 points between them, and all three are about stock pages being found and understood. They are also platform settings as much as site edits, which is why one fix can apply to every dealer on that platform.

How to pitch it

• Vehicle and offer structured data is the specific, technical recommendation that separates you from generic outreach in this vertical.
• Stock pages are usually generated with near-identical titles, which is a duplicate content problem worth demonstrating.
• If you win one dealership, the same findings apply to every other dealer on that platform. Audit three before you call.

What structured data should a dealership site have?

Vehicle markup on each stock page, with make, model, year, price and availability, plus AutoDealer markup for the dealership itself. 24 of the 55 sites had no structured data of any kind.

Why does a sitemap matter more for a dealer than for most businesses?

Because the stock changes daily. A sitemap that lists every vehicle page, updated as cars are added and sold, is how a search engine learns about new listings without crawling the whole site. 15 of the 55 dealer sites had none.

Is it worth pitching a dealer group rather than one dealership?

Often. Sites built on the same platform share their faults, so an audit of one usually describes the rest. Check three before you call.

Do dealer sites have a mobile or security problem?

Rarely. Only 1 of the 55 sites lacked a mobile viewport tag and only 1 was not served over HTTPS, so leading with either would signal you have not looked. The problems are in the metadata that describes the stock: titles, structured data and the sitemap.
